The bell rang with Agniva at the door. Walking in, he dumped the chow on the table easing on sofa.

“You still drink Scotch?”

“Occasionally” Srestha moved the grub to kitchen.

He recalled Srestha strolling in Eden Gardens, the setting sun of the spring dusk sprinkling its vivid ruddy hue. Its ray cast a gentle halo on her face illumining it like aureole, reflecting on her hair aureate with exotic cadence. Lost in reverie of the first love aroma, he kissed her. His tender caress on lips erupted the tsunami of desire creating riptide until it erupted in orgasmic flow, in the obscurity of its Pagoda, a bliss to the yen of an eternal sonata.

That’s past. Since then years had elapsed. After his doctorate from ISI, he joined as a post-doc in Statistics at his alma mater.

“Occasionally” unwrapping she said “Black Dog. Some black dog after you?” entering with two glasses, Aquaguard water.

“Not yet, would be soon”

Srestha didn’t catch “Wait. Forgot the Kurkure65 ” returning with it, she asked “Which dog? If it’s black, somewhat of worry”

“Need a spot of your advice”

“Fire away” Srestha kept a safe distance.

“Been screwing Ishita, prof at university, over a period of time. Older dame, hubby in Santiniketan, lad in Bangalore, she sweet-talked me to it. Thought, why not? Absence of permitted males don’t bar eros”

Srestha sipped the malt, puffing “Married?”

“Me? No. Didn’t get the right one after you. Knotty to throttle the dick. If a lady asks for it, pansy not to give-in”

Srestha thought of asking ‘Then why the hell did you desert me?’ but refrained. Intimacy now formality, she didn’t want to stir the past. Pits could rip to endless depths if feelings swing. Past amour often disbands the glass wall. Her final ‘no’ had ended the liaison.

“You aren’t here to narrate your sex life” she didn’t opt to waste time on intro.

“Nope. She died oddly. Recently”

“How?” Srestha looked up.

“Suddenly in her Shyambazar home. In presence of another of my old prof in ISI, Sumit Das”

The name Sumit Das hit her like a slug. Wasn’t he the same one who was with her the other day? With a dubious caveat of her life risk. She changed posture, gulped a double “Did you say Sumit Das?”

“Of course, I did. What’s the problem?”

“Nothing. Carry on” in a flash checked herself.

“Accident or homicide?”

“Overdose of aspirin. From what I gather”

“Then its suicide” Srestha added.

“Why would anyone commit suicide in presence of another colleague? Dubious, though not improbable” Agniva had a point.

“Where do you fit?”

“With both. Sooner or later police would find my tie-up with Ishita. Quiz me. That isn’t the issue…”

“Who knows of you both?”

“Assume many to guess. Only Barsha knows. Ishita once making love cited of her. Whether suicide or homicide, I’d be sucked in. Especially by her hubby Monojit and their son”

The picture was now clear. Agniva was here for help to wiggle out of the mess. She lit another fag, poured a double “Let me think…”

Seconds turned to minutes. Ethanol wiggled into cerebrum. She moseyed to the balcony for fresh air, puffed out.
